¿Que?
This is a porron, a traditional glass wine pitcher, typical of Catalonia but famous throughout Spain. Shaped like a cross between a wine bottle and a watering can, it pours a very thin stream of liquid, which can travel a surprisingly long way from spout to mouth! Porrones are most commonly filled with wine, either white or red, or beer, and mixed with a small amount of soda, so they go down easy.
¿Como?
To drink from a porron, you start by bringing it very close to your mouth and tilting it back slowly so the beak points towards your teeth. Once liquid starts coming out, pull the porron away from your face and look up. Lower the porron back close to your mouth before stopping so you don't spill any on yourself. Once you have mastered the basics, you can attempt more advanced porron techniques, even pouring it across the table to others! Because the spout doesn’t touch your lips, the porron can be easily shared around a table, making it perfect for sharing with tapas.
¿Donde?
While today the porron can be found all over Spain, here in the US we know of only one place to enjoy this unique experience: Macondo restaurant on the Lower East Side. Not only can you and your friends share porron here, but we are now introducing our new Porron Hour, weekdays from 5pm until 7. When you order a plate of tapas at the bar, you will receive a mini porron clara to share with your friends! Try some of our fantastic estilo libre creations while sharing your newest porron style with everyone.
