Spring 2009 Brazilian Sunday Nights
NEW YORK, April 22, 2009 – Macondo, the Lower East Side’s newest tapas bar and restaurant, announced the start of “Folia!” a Sunday night party celebrating the culture and cuisine of Brazil, in partnership with Leblon Cachaça. Macondo, like its sister restaurant, Rayuela, is known primarily for the Estilo Libre Latino cuisine of owner and Executive Chef Maximo Tejada. According to Tejada, this unique culinary style draws from the traditional dishes and ingredients of the entire Spanish-speaking world and combines them together into new and exciting dishes. Not wanting to leave out the Portuguese speakers of Brazil, Chef Tejada will create an estilo libre version of feijoada, the hearty black bean and meat stew which is the national dish of Brazil. In Tejada’s version, diners will receive individual portions of stew, and share a platter of accouterments, including rice, tomatoes, chilies, oranges and more.
“A Brazilian party could not be complete without beautiful cocktails made with cachaça, the liquor of Brazil,” said owner Hector Sanz. “In partnership with Leblon Cachaça, we will offer free samples of some of the traditional cocktails of Brazil, including most famously the caipirinha, as well as the less well known batidas, a frozen cocktail that resembles a spiked milkshake and comes in many tropical flavors”. In addition to these classic favorites, mixologist Amaury Robayo and bartender Gonzalo Marin will be developing their own new specials, using various Brazilian juices, as well as homemade infusions of Leblon Cachaça.
To complete the party atmosphere, Macondo will feature a live DJ playing both dance hits and atmospheric tracks from contemporary Brazil. “DJ Funkenstein has worked with Rayuela in the past for special events, and we are very excited to be able to feature him weekly at Macondo,” Mr. Sanz exclaimed. As the weather turns warmer, the thought of sitting at Macondo’s outdoor bar stools, enjoying Brazilian food, drink and music, is enough to remind you of Rio. “Folia!” will run every Sunday night through the summer.
